PowerPoint as a strengthening aid

You are the presentation, PowerPoint is your aid. Stunningly often confusion is raised where the opposite is considered to be the right ones. No, take place both verbally and physically, and to rely entirely on PowerPoint as a strengthening tool. This speech from an American soldier shows just that — what an advantage great affect a good PowerPoint can give a presentation.

World Championship in PowerPoint

There are many ways to use and not to use PowerPoint/Keynote. A pro-technique for you to pick up is the ability to present the next picture before it is actually shows up. Thus are the recipients mentally prepared for what is to come, and the red thread becomes clearer. To further pick some plus points, you can pause briefly when the new image come up so that it may fall into the recipients ‘ consciousness or subconscious mind depending on what you intend to do : )

To perform this technique, you have two options. The first option is that you have memorized your presentation really well so that you know which slide comes after the next the whole time. Unfortunately, time is often our worst enemy so will be pretty much unrealistic to remember all of your images in your head. The second option is considerably more time-saving and can give you roughly the same buoyancy, and it is to have a split screen which is suitably located in the room. This way, you can see your laptop where you have been, where you are now and where you going next.

Life is not just about PowerPoint

At IDG today they published an article with several alternative visual aids (apart from PowerPoint and Keynote). Great information! But how on earth they managed to miss the Prezi in the article is a bit of an enigma.

When I thought I had seen everything…

I usually say that PowerPoint is one of the best tools you have as a presenter; I’ll also squeeze in that, at the same time, it can also be the worst since it can be directly counterproductive to your presentation…

And just as I thought I had seen the worst PowerPoint slides a human can see, I come across this image which apparently is an authentic PowerPoint slide showing the complexity of the United States military in Afghanistan. I am speechless.

Timelines in PowerPoint

At all times, in all history books, in everything that we can remember we have read and ourselves reproduced timelines horizontally. Up until a few years ago, when PowerPoint made its entry, and annoyingly enough, lacked a template for timelines was when we simply started to create vertical timelines.

This is completely wrong according to your own perception but above all totally wrong for your audience. As a presenter you have to eliminate as many barriers as possible for your recipient, the fewer obstacles the easier to absorb your message.

Below, I have exemplified both a modern vertical timeline (which really only exists because of ignorance or sheer laziness), and a horizontal timeline so that a timeline can be reproduced. Feel free to download the presentation and test it.
